Three months before the Governments final version of the HHS Mandate takes effect the nations Catholic bishops, lawmakers and non-profits continue their fight to protect religious liberty and conscience rights.
More than 440,000 comments have been filed with the US Dept. of Health and Human Services. with the majority expressing opposition. Our Sunday Visitor Magazine reported that Anthony Picarello general counsel for the US bishops stated that the sheer number of comments could persuade the Obama administration to further amend the mandate. 392,000 comments were filed during the most recent session ending April 8th.
OBAMACARE vs. CATHOLIC CHURCH
The Catholic League for Religious and Civil Liberties in its 2012 ANNUAL REPORT ON ANTI-CATHOLICISM gives an-overview and timeline of the events during the year and stated that “recent developments offer new evidence that the confrontation between the Catholic Church and the Obama administration is reaching collision course dimensions: Writing for the bishops, Anthony R. Picarello, Jr. and Michael F. Moses listed six objections to the HHS mandate that would force Catholic non-profits to pay for morally objectionable services in their insurance plans. One central objection was the “unprecedented” attempt to redefine religious employers as entities that hire and serve mostly people of their own religion; it would effectively nullify the religious exemption traditionally afforded such institutions as Catholic social service agencies, hospitals and colleges.
Thirty religious non profits including hospitals m charities colleges and Catholic dioceses have filed lawsuits against HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius over the mandate. Most have been dismissed. 29 lawsuits brought by private for-profit businesses with about 19 plaintiffs awarded temporary injunction relief while their cases are still pending.
Meanwhile Federal lawmakers are seeking a legislative avenue to addresses the issue, More than 100 co sponsors signed on the Heath Care Conscience Rights Act a bill introduced March 4 buy US Reps. Diane Black, R Texas and Jeff Fortenberry, R, Neb and John Fleming, R-LA
